The Lord Botetourt wrestlers took fourth place in the Titan Toughman wrestling tournament at Hidden Valley High School last week.

The tournament was scheduled for two days, but with snow in the forecast the entire tournament was held Friday, with consolation rounds cancelled so the semifinals and finals could be held on four mats. Patrick Henry ended up winning the tournament, with Staunton River second, Northside third and Lord Botetourt fourth.

“We finished fourth as a team, but I think if we had some wrestle-backs we may have been able to finish a tad bit higher,” said LB coach Chuck Burton.

Botetourt finished with four individual champions, Nick Young at 106, Hunter Sell at 145, Luke Young at 160 and Jacob Brown at 170. Jacob Booth took a third at 182.

Lord Botetourt’s Nick Young works his way out of a jam against Caleb Linick of Roanoke Catholic in the 106-pound semifinal in the Titan Toughman Tournament. Young won his division.

“I’m proud of the way the guys are wrestling right now, that is a testament to them and my assistant coaches,” said Burton. “We’re getting better in every phase of our wrestling right now, and to have as many sets of eyes on our guys as we do, it really allows us to focus in on what we’re missing consistently as a team and where we can improve.”

This weekend the Cavaliers will travel to Turner Ashby High for a two-day individual tournament, then LB will host Glenvar and James River in a tri-match on Wednesday, Dec. 20. This will be “Youth Night,” and all young wrestlers are encouraged to attend.

After the Christmas break, Botetourt will host a tournament on Saturday, Jan. 6. There will be 10 teams wrestling in a dual-style format, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Hunter Sell of Lord Botetourt is about to pin George Young of Covington on his way to winning the 145-pound class at the Titan Toughman Tournament.
