The Lord Botetourt girls basketball team remained undefeated Monday as the Cavaliers took a 60-35 win over Salem in Daleville. LB is now 4-0.

Monday’s game got off to a slow start as Salem led 4-3 after one period, but things started heating up in the second quarter. The Cavaliers outscored Salem 17-6 in the second period to take a 21-9 lead at the half.

“There were nine total fouls in the first quarter and we took a while to adjust to their 1-3-1 (defense),” said LB coach Chuck Pound. “Eventually we began attacking in the right areas, although we still had a lot of turnovers. That is one of our biggest issues right now, not taking care of the ball.”

Brooklyn Shelton led LB with 17 points and eight rebounds. Janna Alam had a dozen points and five assists, while Miette Veldman had 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals. Scottie Cook had her best game of the young season with seven points and nine boards.

Last week the girls hosted Franklin County and took a 55-29 win. Shelton had 17 points and 15 rebounds in this one, while Veldman filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals. Brooke Snyder had seven points off the bench for LB

“We played sloppily in the first half,” said Pound. “We’re still working on timing and getting to know which parts fit together.”

The Cavaliers have a rematch with Franklin County tonight in Rocky Mount, then they’re off for a week before returning next Wednesday, Dec. 20, with a game in Abingdon.
