The James River girls are in the midst of a busy schedule. The Knights had four games last week and will play four again this week.

This week started off with a 53-33 loss at Giles on Monday night. The Knights were at Alleghany on Tuesday, then back home for “Senior Night” against Radford on Thursday. Friday they’re at Auburn, and next week River will host Floyd on Monday, Feb. 5, before a road game at Carroll County a week from tonight, on Feb. 7.

On Monday at Giles the Knights had a 12-8 lead after the first quarter but were outscored in the second period, 17-6.

“After halftime we just ran out of gas,” said coach E.D. Schechterly. “We shot a total of 34 foul shots and we only made 16. I have always been told that you win or lose the game at the foul line, and if we would have shot better from the floor and foul line the outcome would be different.”

Lacey Lucado led the Knights with 11 points and Madison Brogan had eight.

Last Wednesday the girls hosted Glenvar and lost 40-27. Brogan had 10 points and seven boards.

“Glenvar was a good game for us, even though we didn’t come up with a W,” said Schechterly. “The girls played hard and we basically lost the game in the second quarter. We were outscored 17-8 in that quarter and we couldn’t fight back to get it close.”

On Thursday at Floyd the Knights were both tired and overmatched, falling 73-11.

“Our girls fought hard and also were able to break the press and trap a couple of times and then we would just turn the ball over,” said Schechterly.

On Friday the girls were back home for their third game in as many days and they fell to Giles, 45-27. The Knights played well in the second half but fell behind 22-9 at intermission and couldn’t catch up. River played with eight players due to injuries and illness. Megan Hix had eight points and Lacey Lucado had seven.

The loss dropped the Knights to 2-13 on the season.
