The James River boys soccer team was scheduled to host Lord Botetourt in an intra-county match on Tuesday. LB came into that game at 1-0-1 after a big win in Salem last Friday night while River was 0-1 after losing the season opener to Nelson County.
Last Friday’s game at Spartan Field in Salem was the second between the Cavs and Spartans after the two battled to a tie in Daleville. This one appeared headed to a possible standoff again after a scoreless first half.
“We played well in the first half, dominating most aspects of the entire game to include possession and shots on goal, however we simply were not working smart enough to penetrate their defensive line,” said LB coach Tim Wright. “This season we are going to have to be a team that brings our best every minute of every game while being diligent to improve upon the weaknesses of our game. Our non-district and district games will simply be competitive; we are going to have to consistently work hard and work smart.”
Salem was able to pick up a lose ball in the box half way through the second half, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. The Cavaliers were used to being in such a position as a result of the first game and responded with a bit more energy.
“In the first half all our shots were outside the box, we simply struggled to penetrate their back line,” said Wright.
Inside the final two minutes of play an attack initiated by Blake Myers resulted in junior Nathan Rich receiving the ball for a goal scoring shot. It was the second time in as many games against Salem that the Cavaliers scored with the clock on the field to avert a loss.
“My guys showed true grit, tying a talented Spartan team in the final minutes of play,” said Wright. “It truly was exciting and rewarding to see my guys work hard in the midst of it all.”
In overtime both teams were defensively and offensively strong. However, the Cavaliers proved to be dominant as junior Kyle Wood hit an uncontested shot from 20 yards out with one minute left in overtime play for the win.
Meanwhile, in Springwood, River lost to Nelson County in their season opener, 3-2. Brad Stephenson had a goal and an assist for River while Tristan Flood also had a goal and Jacob Wagner had an assist.
“I was pleased given it was the first game of the season, but we have some areas to work on for sure,” said River coach Jared Whiting. “The effort was outstanding from everyone. Everyone hates a loss but it was also encouraging. I saw a lot of good things and can see where we are headed and anticipate a successful season. These guys have the heart and desire needed along with the skills to put together some quality games.”
After Tuesday’s game with LB, the Knights are scheduled to return the trip to Nelson County Friday, then take off for spring break. Lord Botetourt will host Franklin County on Thursday night.
