The public is invited to join the 12th annual Buchanan Arbor Day Celebration as the community “plants the seeds of tomorrow today” on the Town Park this Friday, April 6 at 11 a.m.
Trees and supplies are being purchased through donations by more than 20 area residents, businesses and civic organizations that allow the town to continue as a confirmed Tree City USA. The commemorative tree planting on Friday is part of that program.
The trees planted on the Town Park will not only provide beauty and shade for future generations, they will help absorb and slow down precipitation and filter it before it reaches the James River, thereby helping to reduce potential erosion into the James River, according to an announcement by the town.
Virginia House of Delegates Representative Terry Austin is scheduled as one of the key speakers at the day’s activities. He will be joined by Buchanan Mayor Craig Bryant and Virginia Department of Forestry representatives Joe Boswell and Lara Johnson, who also will speak during the program.
As part of the morning’s activities, the Buchanan Arbor Day Donors Plaque will be unveiled. The plaque has been donated by Bobby and Barbara Falls of the Frame Shop & Gallery. If you would like to make a donation towards Buchanan’s Arbor Day and the future purchases and care of trees, contact the Town of Buchanan at 254-1212.
Following the unveiling, those in attendance will be able to participate in a ceremonial planting of a Thornless Honey Locust on the Town Park. Light refreshments are being provided by members of the Buchanan Special Events Committee and the Buchanan Town Improvement Society.
