Radford ladies take 1-0 win over JR, rematch at Radford Thurs.; River 4-1 in TRD going into week

The James River girls split two soccer games last week, losing to Radford but bouncing back for a win over Giles.

The Knights lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Radford in Springwood. The much-anticipated match was full speed from start to finish. James River had many shots on goal, but the only one that counted was the one Radford’s Makenzie Page scored late in the match.

On Thursday at home against Giles the Knights were back on the winning side at 7-1. The game was spirited, but the result was one sided. Abigale Wentworth started the scoring five minutes into the match with an outside chip shot. Grace Dye added a second with a well-placed free kick, from 25 yards out, a couple of minutes later. Meghan Hill connected for a third goal inside the opening 10 minutes.

The second half started with an early goal from Meaghan Hix, assisted by Grace Dye, inside the first five minutes.  The final goal of the game was the completion of another hat trick for McClung, with an assist from Olivia Baker, at the midpoint of the half.

Freshman goal keeper Haley Meadows had eight second-half saves on the night for James River, including a couple of dramatic breakaway stops.

The Knights were scheduled to host Alleghany on Tuesday, followed by a return trip to Radford on Thursday and a game at Giles on Friday.

The Knights are now 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the Three Rivers District.
