All three incorporated towns in Botetourt will hold elections for town council and mayor during the November 6 general election.
Potential candidates for the seats that will be open have until June 12 to qualify to be on the ballot for their particular town.
Botetourt voters will also participate in a special election in November when they will fill the unexpired term of former Commonwealth’s Attorney Joel Branscom. Branscom was appointed as a circuit court judge this spring. Branscom’s term expires December 31, 2019, which means the office will be up for election again during the November 2019 general election.
Candidates wanting to qualify to run for Commonwealth’s Attorney have until August 17 to qualify. The Botetourt County Committee of the Republican Party is holding a mass meeting June 19 to select a party candidate to run for the seat. Branscom ran as a Republican.
Botetourt County Voter Registrar Traci Clark said so far her office has received paperwork for two candidates for Troutville Town Council and one candidate for Troutville mayor. Troutville has three council seats up for election in November. Incumbents Pat Shaver and John Cook have submitted paperwork to be on the ballot again to run for council. Incumbent David Horton has also filed to run for another term as mayor.
One candidate has submitted paperwork to run for one of the three Fincastle Town Council seats up for election, incumbent George Sydnor. No one has filed to run for mayor so far.
So far, no one has filed to run for the four council seats and mayor in the Town of Buchanan, Clark said.
This will be the second time Buchanan voters have selected council members in November, and again it will be a bit different as the town transitions into the new charter passed by the General Assembly this year.
Of the four council candidates chosen in the November election, the two with the lowest vote count will serve one-year terms. Those seats will then be up again for election in the November 2019 General Election. The other two seats will serve a two-year term and will be up again for election in the November 2020 General Election along with the mayor.
Botetourt voters will also choose a new Sixth Congressional District representative. Bob Goodlatte is not seeking re-election. He ran as a Republican, and that party is holding a convention this Saturday in Harrisonburg to select a nominee from among eight candidates— Ben Cline, Cynthia Dunbar, Mike Desjadon, Chaz Haywood, Ed Justo, Kathryn Lewis, Elliot Pope and Douglas Wright.
The Democratic Party is holding a primary on June 12 when voters in the district can choose between four candidates for that party’s nomination— Sergio Coppola, Jennifer Lewis, Charlotte Moore and Peter Volosin.
Two Independents are also seeking places on the November ballot— Steve America and Michael Frend.
There are three candidates running for the Republican Party nomination to run for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat Tim Kaine. Nick Freitas, E.W. Jackson and Corey Stewart are running in the June 12 Republican Primary.
Kaine is unopposed for the Democratic Party nomination.
