The Botetourt Children’s Fishing Carnival is Saturday, June 2 on banks of the James River in Buchanan.

The Botetourt County Recreation and Facilities Department and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) have teamed up for more than a decade with several local businesses and organizations to provide the fishing event.

The free event is held on the Buchanan Town Park along the banks of the James River where kids can fish in the river or, for smaller kids, in one of the trout tanks.

Area kids ages 15 and under are invited to enjoy the morning with games, prizes and other events from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Activities include Casting Contest, Fish Knowledge Challenge, Team Fishing Contest, Kiddies Games, Gold Fish Eating Contest, Worms in the Dirt Contest, Minnow Counting Contest, Fly Fishing Casting, BB Range and more.

Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

The Fishing Carnival coincides with the VDGIF’s Free Fishing Days, June 2-3 when fishing is allowed without a license.

Registration is the day of the event at the Town Park.

For information, call 928-2130.
