BUSHONG, James R.
James Robert Bushong, 73, died at home Tuesday, November 6, 2018.
Jim was a graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, Class of 1964. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College and graduated with a teaching certificate in Architectural Drafting and Design. He enjoyed a variety of jobs including: Mr. Peanut, a radio DJ, a farmer, a painter, a butcher, a packaging designer, an engineering draftsman, and most notably a teacher, mentor, humanitarian, and friend.
Jim received numerous awards and acknowledgements over his 46 years as an educator in Botetourt: VA Skills USA, VICA Hall of Honor, Outstanding Trade and Education Teacher of the Year, VA Association for Trade and Industrial Education Teacher of the Year, VICA Advisor of the Year, VA Vocation Teacher of the Year, Richard Henegar Jr. Acts of Kindness Community Award, and many other accolades for outstanding service from various educational and community organizations. He proudly served on several boards of directors as well as volunteer and church advisory committees. Jim enjoyed participating in community initiatives and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James W. and Cecilia C. Bushong, and son, Kevin W.H. Bushong. Jim is survived by his wife, Kay; sisters, Beverly Getzen and Patricia (Alfred) Williams; daughters ,Kimberly (Sammy) Crawford and Kristal Bushong; step-children Michelle Staton, Sara (David) Campbell, and Jamie Staton; grandchildren: Kole Bushong, Kalen Bushong, Noah Campbell, Camden Staton, Gabe Staton, and Ryan Staton; great-granddaughter, Blake Bushong.
The family extends their deepest appreciation to Dr. Morales, Chris Sink RN, the entire 10th floor of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and Sarah Quinlan of Good Samaritan Hospice.
A Celebration of Jim’s life was held at 3 p.m. Friday, November 9 at Rader Funeral Home, Daleville with the Rev. Aubrey Johnson officiating. Burial was in Daleville Cemetery. DUNCAN, Mark A.
On November 17, 2018, Mark Aaron Duncan, 40, of Vinton, passed peacefully from this life surrounded by his loving family and friends.
He is survived by his devoted partner, Ashlee Foutz Colwell; his son, Teil Duncan; stepson, Zeke Colwell; his mother and father, Kay and Neil Duncan of Fincastle; brother, Tracy Duncan and wife, Jane of Jefferson, Md.; sister, Adrienne Thrasher and husband, Kelley of Eagle Rock; sister, Leslie Woodie and husband Mark of Daleville; sister, Allison Hall and husband Jerry of Riner; brother, Chris Duncan of Fincastle; sister, Molly Marshall and husband Greg of Buchanan; sister, Carrie Carswell and husband Warren of Buchanan; numerous nieces and nephews; one uncle, Chick; one aunt, Lorraine, both of Evansville, Ind.; two very special friends, Jerry Foutz of Vinton and Jason Stafford of Roanoke.
He was a very proud Army Veteran (disabled) and could talk endlessly about his military exploits as a paratrooper of the 509th Geronimo. He was an avid camper and along with his partner Ashlee and sons Zeke and Teil spent many peaceful days and nights camping and fishing in the mountains of Virginia.
Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family received friends on Tuesday, November 27, from 6-8 p.m. at Oakey’s East Chapel. A Memorial Mass in honor of his life will be offered by the Rev. FALSTREAUX, Anita J.
Anita Jo “Jodi” Falstreaux, 79, of Buchanan, passed away Monday, November 12, 2018.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Leah Entsminger; and sisters, Judy and Carol.
She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne Yopp; son-in-law, Andy Yopp; grandchildren, Brandon Bradshaw, Brandi Bowen, Austin Entsminger; great-grandchildren, Alyssa McCullough, Shay Lynn Fowler; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held 5 p.m. Friday, November 30, at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. Marla Moore and the Rev. Mike Woody officiating.

HURD, Betty L.
Betty Hurd passed away on November 17, 2018, at the age of 85 years.
Betty was born in Kohler, Wis. and obtained her degree in art from Milwaukee-Downer College, a women’s college in Wisconsin.
Betty loved art and was exceedingly talented. No medium seemed out of her reach, oil painting and watercolor, cross stitch, quilting, embroidery and other needle crafts, silversmithing and jewelry making. She had a T-shirt exclaiming “Loves to play in the dirt,” as she loved to keep vegetable and flower gardens. She loved the natural world around her; hiking, camping, and canoeing.
She worked at the library at Hollins University.
She is survived three sons, Richard, John, and Charles, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Russell Hurd, her husband of 61 years, and they are now together again.
A Celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, at the Wheatland Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1560 Wheatland Road, Buchanan.

KYLE, Thelma L.
Thelma Lee Kyle, 96, of Botetourt County, sadly passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2018.
She was born on October 1, 1922 and was preceded in death by her husband, Bud (L.R.) Kyle; parents, Emmett Lee and Lura Painter Lee; sisters, Pauline Shaw, Dorothy Simmons, June Lee, Norma Lee, Virgie Duncan; brothers, Emmett Lee, Garland (Mack) Lee and Jack Lee.
Left to cherish her memory are her sisters, Bernice Lee Otey of Roanoke, Audrey L. Hawkins of Orlando, Fla.; her son, Danny L. Kyle (Elaine) of Troutville; her daughter, Patricia K. Lawhorn (J.P.) of Bedford; three grandsons, Ian Kyle, Zachary Kyle, Nathan Lawhorn; and four great-grandsons.
Thelma was born on her parents’ farm near Caldwell Mountain in Botetourt County. She was a wonderful, caring and loving wife and mother. She had a special love for her parents. Thelma especially enjoyed the family gatherings, country music and the outdoors. She spent many hours working on her flowers and keeping her yard and home spotless. A special thanks to Jeanne Duncan and the staff of Jeanne’s Elderly Care who treated her like part of their family. Thelma will never be forgotten.

A funeral service was held at 12 noon on Monday, November 26, at Oakey’s East Chapel with Pastor T.G. Ayers officiating. Interment was in Trinity Cemetery. The family received friends on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Marshall, Christina D.
December 12, 1923 – October 29, 2018
Christina “Chris” Douglas Marshall, 94, known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, died in Gainesville, Fla., on October 29, 2018.
Born in Dornoch, Scotland to William and Annie Douglas, Chris was an excellent student and older sister to Nan and Margaret. After relocating to Tidworth, England with her family as a young woman, Chris met James Samuel “Sam” Marshall, a U.S. serviceman, at a “sweetheart dance” during World War II. The two fell in love, married on August 5, 1944, and moved to Rocky Mount, Va. They eventually settled in Roanoke, Va. with their daughters, Sandra and Deedy. After Sam’s death, Chris learned to drive, became an LPN and worked at Jefferson Surgical Clinic. She was an excellent cook, was devoted to her church, and loved a good book with a hot cup of tea.
In addition to her two daughters, Chris is survived by a son-in-law, Wes; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Chad (Nenden), Christina (Darrin), and Kelli; two great-grandchildren, Landon and Listrik; and a long-term best friend, Joe Buhrman; and loved by many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 1, at Mountain View Memorial Park, 5970 Grassy Hill Road, Boones Mill, Va. at 11 a.m.

MOOREFIELD, Louise J.
Louise Joyce Moorefield, 97, of Botetourt County, died Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at Carrington Place in Daleville.
Louise was born in Patrick County June 24, 1921 and lived in Botetourt County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late James William and Fannie Sue Spencer Joyce. Louise was a department manager for Heironimus Department Store for many years, enjoyed reading, and was a member of Fincastle Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, James “Jimmy” Morefield, and her husband, Robert Ivan Moorefield. Louise is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert “Bobby” and Ellen Morefield of Fincastle; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Clara Joyce; and sister, Hazel Davis, all of Fincastle.

RICHARDSON, JAMES J, III
May 17, 1946 – November 19, 2018
Commander James J. Richardson III, U.S. Navy (Retired), 72, of Daleville, went to be with the Lord on November 19, 2018.
Known since childhood as Whitey, he is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Julia Dodson Richardson; son, James J. Richardson IV and fiancée Rachel Leahy of Vienna, Va.; son, Commander David K. Richardson, U.S. Navy, daughter-in-law, Mary Katherine Richardson, and grandchildren, Thomas, Joseph, and Elizabeth of Annapolis, Md.; sister Phyllis, brother-in-law Keith Dodson and wife Bonnie Dodson; lifelong “Buds,” Bill Carter and Terry Quinn; and many extended family members, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Whitey Richardson was born in Roanoke, the son of the late James J. Richardson II and Elizabeth Mason Richardson. After graduating from Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, he attended the University of South Carolina, received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, and was commissioned as an Ensign through the Naval ROTC program. He served with distinction as an officer in the Navy for over 22 years, achieving the rank of Commander and earning the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and multiple Navy Commendation Medals. His naval service included several overseas deployments as a surface warfare officer on five different ships; duty as an instructor of computer science at the US Naval Academy; and service on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. He earned a master’s degree in computer science from the Naval Postgraduate School and graduated from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College.
After two decades in the Navy and many years working as a defense contractor, Whitey and Julia retired back to their roots in the Roanoke Valley and made their home in Daleville. Active as a leader and volunteer in the Fincastle Presbyterian Church, Whitey served as both a deacon and elder on the Church Council for many years. Throughout his life, Whitey was known as a superb athlete who enjoyed basketball, tennis, and golf. His hobbies included fishing, volunteering as a referee and coach, playing cards with friends, and always cheering on his favorite sports teams, especially Duke basketball. He loved vacationing on the Carolina beaches with his family and dancing to beach music with his wife and best friend. Above all, Whitey was known to all as a loyal friend and family man with the sunniest of dispositions and kindest of hearts. He leaves a legacy of family, love, patriotism, service, and faith, and he will be dearly missed by all those who had the honor to know him.
The Richardson family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to their extended family and friends for all the love and support in the last few years. The family would also like to thank Dr. Roy Habib and his staff, and all the nurses and health care professionals at Lewis Gale Hospital for their exceptional care. SMITH, Samuel E., Jr.
On Sunday, November 18, 2018, Samuel Edward “Tony” Smith, Jr. went to be with the Lord. He was born on June 30, 1920 to the late Mamie Frances Downs Smith and Samuel E. Smith, Sr. of Arcadia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Kathryn Margaret Hundley Smith; two sisters, Frances Belle Hendricks of Roanoke and Dixie Smith Marshall of Richmond; four brothers, William, Leonard, Guy and Cleatius Smith; and sister-in-law, Alma Smith.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his current wife and devoted caregiver, Mary Shinault Smith of Roanoke; one sister-in-law, Edith Smith of Arcadia; and a host of nephews and nieces.
Sam was medically discharged from the US Navy near the end of WWII due to suspected black lung. He became a skilled carpenter and was a member of the Washington Area Carpenters Union for over 50 years. While his primary vocation was a master cabinet maker, he helped build inauguration platforms in Washington, the CIA Building in Arlington, and the teller cages in the lobby for Roanoke First National Bank.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Bethel Ridge Assisted Living in Buchanan, and Friendship Manor of Roanoke, where Sam resided for the last few years of his life.
