Troutville’s Lyndsey Hunnell, a graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, was a member of the Xavier University women’s golf team that won the Rio Verde Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz. last weekend.
The team had a score of 591 for the tournament. The Musketeers entered the final 18 holes of the tournament in third place behind Arkansas State by two strokes and Boise State by one stroke. Xavier led the tournament in Par 4 scoring at 4.23 (+25) and was tied for second in total birdies with 22. Three Musketeers finished in the top 10 overall, propelling them to the top spot on day two.
Hunnell and teammate Mikayla Fitzpatrick both finished tied for fourth overall, each with a total of 146 (+4). Hunnell carded a one-over (72) and finished tied for second in birdies with seven and tied for fifth in Par 4 scoring at 4.09 (+2).
Hunnell is a graduate student at Xavier University, in Cincinnati, Ohio, after graduating from the University of Virginia. She was a two-time all-state golfer at LB and won the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame tournaments in 2015 and ’16. She played in the U.S. Amateur championship in 2016.
