Sterlie “Sonny” Waddell, Jr., 77 of Troutville, died suddenly Saturday, March 2, 2019.

Sonny was born in Roanoke July 13, 1941 and lived in Botetourt County all of his life. He was the son of the late Sterlie R. and Nellie H. Brown Waddell.

Sonny served in the United States Air Force and was a brick mason. He laid the bricks in many buildings throughout Botetourt and Roanoke. Sonny enjoyed coin collecting, hunting, fishing, fixing lawn mowers and tinkering. He served on the Troutville Rescue Squad for many years, was assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 137, was a member of Troutville Church of the Brethren, and loved the Greenwood Restaurant.

Sonny is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol Scaggs Wadell; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Pamela Waddell of Asheboro, N.C.; daughter, Susan Waddell Jennings of Troutville; special granddaughter, Heather Murrell; grandchildren, Ryan Jennings, Hannah Hoover, Josh Dickens, Christian Dickens; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; beloved four-legged son, Kasey; brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Nancy Waddell of Troutville; favorite sister: Sylvia Waddell Dickerson and her husband James Dunham of Fincastle; and close friend (like a son), Ronny Wallace of Troutville.

A memorial service with military honors was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at Rader Funeral Home, Daleville with Pastor Terry Johnson officiating. A private burial will be conducted at the convenience of the family at Troutville Cemetery. Sonny’s family received friends at the funeral home Saturday from noon until the time of the service.
