The James River soccer teams played a girls-boys doubleheader against Glenvar at Green Hill Park in Roanoke County last week and both teams lost by one goal.

The girls opened the doubleheader with a 2-1 loss to the Highlanders. River had the ball the majority of the time but the Highlanders were able to pull off the win.

“The match was pretty one-sided in terms of possession, with James River holding much of the ball and forcing the attack in the first half,” said River coach Bill Smith. “Glenvar managed a few counter attacks but could not sustain control for long.”

Late in the half Jordin Crouch of Glenvar connected on a counter to put the Highlanders up 1-0 at the break. It was Crouch again early in the second half from long range, assisted by Jayla Furman, for a 2-0 lead.

The Knights increased the tempo of the game, driving hard into the Glenvar defense, but finishing was elusive. Midway through the period Megan Hill converted a penalty kick to close the gap to one. Despite several solid build-ups, the Knights were unable to penetrate the Glenvar defense. Meghan Thompson had 11 saves for Glenvar and Haley Meadows had seven for River. The Knights are now 1-2-1.

The boys game followed and Glenvar won that by one goal as well, 1-0. Gavin Curfiss scored with 12:35 left in the second half with an assist by Riley Geddes.  Glenvar improved to 4-1-1 with the win while River fell to 2-2.

The River teams were rained out of matches at Giles on Monday. They’ll host Carroll County in a doubleheader tonight and Thursday Alleghany is here for a doubleheader in the final matches before spring break.
