The James River girls’ soccer team won their 10th game of the season Monday when they won at Floyd County, 3-2.

The Buffaloes celebrated their senior night and the team was playing well as they hosted the Knights in the second meeting of these Three Rivers District teams. Long grass and high wind played to the direct style of the home team and they had some significant success. The conditions slowed play and made attacking a chore.
Floyd struck first with an unassisted goal from Devyn Gossett 25 minutes into the contest, but Stephanie Vasquez answered for the Knights ten minutes later, assisted by Catherine Amos, and the score at the break was 1-1.
Megan Hill opened the second half with an early goal, assisted by Bridgette West, but the offense struggled to build on this lead. Floyd scored again for the Buffaloes to tie the score with 14:30 remaining on the clock but Kayla Myers answered a minute later with the final goal of the match to win the game.
Haley Meadows put in a brilliant performance in the goal for the Knights with 12 saves.
Last week the Knights played three district opponents and went 2-1. They started with a 2-1 win over Alleghany. Hill scored for the Knights in the closing minutes of the first half, assisted by Myla Lester, to give James River the lead. This lead would hold most of the game. With four minutes remaining in the match Carlee Lanford scored an unassisted goal for the Mountaineers, tying the score 1-1. Hill returned the favor two minutes later to get the win in exciting fashion.
Colleen Peery made four saves for the Knights and Haley Meadows made three.
On Thursday the girls were shut out by Radford in Springwood, 3-0, but River bounced back with a 4-3 win at Giles on Friday.
The Knights will travel to Radford for a rematch tonight and on Thursday they’re scheduled to play at Carroll County. They’re 10-3-1 overall.
