The Lord Botetourt volleyball team will host William Byrd tonight in a match between two of the top teams in the Blue Ridge District. LB is undefeated and Byrd was tied for second in the BRD coming into the week.
The Terriers and Franklin County were both 3-1 in BRD play and they were scheduled to meet on Tuesday in Rocky Mount, but results were too late for publication. Both had a loss to Lord Botetourt, who continues to dominate play in the area. The Cavaliers were 11-0 heading into a Tuesday match at William Fleming and heavily favored to continue their winning streak.
“Our girls are having fun and playing really well,” said LB coach Julie Conner. “They’re good. We put in two new plays last week and they have a good time every day. It’s fun to coach them.”
Botetourt is the two-time defending state champ in Class 3 and, despite losing some key players to graduation, the Cavaliers look just as strong this season. Last week they beat Franklin County and Northside in three sets each to not only remain unbeaten, but to keep alive their string of not having lost a set all season.
Against Franklin County the Cavaliers won 25-10, 25-21 and 25-13. Miette Veldman led LB with 18 kills and 11 digs while Taylor Robertson had eight kills, eight digs and three aces. Ryanna Clark had 10 kills and Jordyn Kepler had 34 assists.
Last Thursday in Daleville the girls eased by Northside, 25-11, 25-9 and 25-9 as Veldman had 15 kills. Clark had six, Robertson had five and Kepler added to her career school assists record with 28 more.
While the Cavaliers aren’t overlooking anyone, they’re looking forward to the Tournament of Champions event at Patrick Henry High School on Saturday, October 10, when they’ll meet host Patrick Henry, Radford, E.C. Glass and Tunstall.
