River coach E.D. Schechterly talks to the girls during a timeout.

The James River girls saw their basketball season come to an end last week with a loss to Giles in Springwood. The visiting Spartans took a 45-35 win.

“I thought it was one of the best games we played in the district,” said River coach E.D. Schechterly. “They say it’s not who wins the game but how hard you play, and our girls played with pride and desire and showed they weren’t giving up on anything.”

Senior Madison Brogan was River’s leading scorer with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

“She played well on both sides of the court, and to me that’s the best way to end your high school career,” said Schechterly.

Myla Lester had 10 points and Kalyiah Davis had six rebounds for the Knights.

River ended the season with a 4-17 overall record. The Three Rivers does not have a district tournament and that wasn’t good enough to make the regional, so the Knights’ season is over.

“My view of the season is that we didn’t work hard enough on the fundamentals, and that’s my fault as the head coach,” said Schechterly. “We needed to work harder when we had everyone there for practice but you never know who you will have from one practice to another.”

River will lose two seniors, Brogan and Lakota Lucado.

“We’re hoping to have more girls wanting to play next year,” said Schechterly. “I hope to have open gyms this summer and I have been looking about a couple of team camps. I think we will be better next year.”
