These tomato labels are in the Courthouse Gallery of the Botetourt County History Museum.
Past President Joe Buhrman donated these framed labels to the Botetourt County Historical Society.
Labels such as these were miniature works of art created especially for each farm’s cannery. In the late 1880s and early 1900s, Botetourt was the second largest tomato-canning county in the United States. The top label is from the J.B. Buhrman & Son farm in Gala. The second is from the W.J. Powell farm in Fincastle. The third is from F. D. Bolton in Fincastle. Please consider donating one that you own to the History Museum for a special exhibit and to help preserve the history of Botetourt County for future generations.
Some of the old cannery buildings are still standing and have been repurposed.
