The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts have launched a campaign called “I’ve Got you Covered” to promote the compassionate act of wearing face coverings. Community members are encouraged to take a selfie wearing a face covering, use the hashtag #IveGotYouCovered, and tag a friend on social media.
Cloth face coverings slow the spread of COVID-19. They can be made from household items, such as a piece of cloth and rubber bands, a bandana, or a scarf. Face coverings reduce the risk of being infected with COVID-19, especially when combined with physical distancing and hand washing. The virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity – speaking, coughing, or sneezing, even if people are not experiencing symptoms.
We encourage everyone to join the movement by reminding others that covering your face when you have to go out in public protects those around you. Use these sample speaking points when having conversations with others:
- I’ve Got you Covered. I wear a face covering to protect you. Cloth face coverings slow the spread of COVID-19. They can be made from household items, such as a piece of cloth and rubber bands, a bandana, or a scarf.
- Can You Cover for Me? I appreciate you wearing a cloth face covering to protect me. Your face covering reduces the risk of being infected with COVID-19, especially when combined with physical distancing and washing hands. The virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity – speaking, coughing, or sneezing.
- Who Do You Cover For? Your face covering protecting others, especially those most at risk for severe illness from COVID-19, such as people 65 and older and those with underlying medical conditions. Consider your loved ones who may be at risk and the importance of protecting our friends and neighbors. Join the movement by reminding your friends that covering your face when you have to go out in public protects those around you.
In addition to wearing face coverings, the best way to prevent COVID-19 is to stay home whenever possible, maintain six feet of physical distance from others, continue proper hand hygiene by washing hands often with soap and water for a minimum of twenty seconds or by using hand sanitizer, and to clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as door knobs, light switches, and shared spaces. By continuing to follow this guidance, we can reduce the spread of COVID-19, even as we reopen our businesses and communities.
