The Botetourt County Historical Museum contains the original 1772 log courthouse “witness box.” It was donated by T.K. Peck. A female mannequin represents Mrs. Nancy Clemons Redman who sat in this chair on August 15, 1799. She was ordered to be “three times dunked by the Sheriff of the County at the publick dunking stool.” She was tied and put in the pond which was about where Ed Bordett’s studio is now in Fincastle. On March 13, 1799, she had married Stephen Redman. What did she do? The story is she was “loud of mouth.”
