On August 10, copies of the book “Chronicles of Botetourt County” were presented to Lord Botetourt High School and James River High School. The books will be used by the 11th grade history classes.
Created in celebration of Botetourt County’s 250th anniversary, Ed McCoy’s collection of essays looks back across more than 25 decades to examine the county’s history through its people, places, organizations, churches, businesses and events.
Editor of The Fincastle Herald from 1984 -2018, McCoy traces the growth of the county from its beginnings before Europeans began exploring west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, telling stories that look at the forces that created Botetourt County, and the influences of its citizens upon the world around them to the present day.
Commissioned by the Botetourt County Historical Society Inc., “Chronicles” was funded by matching donations from generous members of the community. Working closely with the author, the Anniversary Book Committee members included John Williamson; Ann Layman, BCHS vice-president; Susan Hays, secretary; and Ed Holt, finance chair. Local artist Mark Woodie donated the artwork for the cover. The Honorable Malfourd “Bo” Trumbo contributed its “Foreword.”
