The 15th annual recital for Mike Lee’s music students will be held Sunday, Oct. 4 at Limestone Park in Buchanan, beginning at 2 p.m. and going to 5 p.m. or so. There will be about 30 students performing with guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, fiddle and vocals. This will be considered a drive-in recital with cars parked at least six feet apart, but you can sit in a chair in front of your car if you wish.
This year there will be only one recital, which will turn the usual marathon recital into a 5 or 10K. Children and adults will be performing in alphabetical order this year. “The students are asked to sit in chairs near the stage when the recital begins to closely observe their fellow performers as this can be very educational,” said teacher Mike Lee. “As usual, we will have a prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem, which will be sung by Ella Folk. Special guest and motivational speaker will be Steve Thomas from Gallatin, Tenn., who has performed with many Nashville greats and now fronts a bluegrass band, Steve Thomas and The Time Machine. Steve is also a great music teacher and has done workshops even in foreign countries. This year the beloved David Austin will also be performing an original song about Botetourt County. David will also double from his special guest spot to stage hand as he makes the students feel very comfortable setting them up to perform,” Lee said.
The concession stand will be open with BBQ, hot dogs and more. The recital is free, although donations will be accepted with much of those monies going to Limestone Park and its ministries. Lee asks that people be responsible in honoring the rules of our state in dealing with the COVID-19 as they enjoy the music.
