TROUTVILLE – Back in 1973, a pipeline was installed along Stoney Battery Road here. Now, nearly half a century later, the town had decided it needs replacing after a dozen repairs in the last few years.
The latest problem is on the left side curve, near the intersection with Apple Orchard Lane was discovered in early September. And by last week there was another sighting of bright orange cones that warned motorists of road work.
The latest break runs about 12 feet along the 1,000-feet-long pipe, said Town Council member Dean Paderick, chairman of the town’s Public Works Committee.
“This is nothing new. This pipe has been an issue for the last three years,” he said.
During the town’s Sept. 21 council meeting, members voted to repair the problem spot, but required the Public Works employee to shop around for the best price on material. Paderick estimated this round of repairs will cost around $1,000. During last month’s council meeting, member Granville Grant motioned that the town comparison shop for the materials used in the repair work. The motion was seconded by Paderick and unanimously approved.
Council estimated it will cost between $20,000 to $22,000 for a complete repair. Paderick estimates the town already spent $15,000 with its piecemeal approach.
“I’ve already approached the mayor and he said go ahead and fix it” for good, Paderick said.
The town should take official action soon. The sooner the better, Paderick believes. “We just need to go ahead and fix this problem.”
