Pictured is an individual serving bean pot donated to the Botetourt County Museum by Yvette B. Beheler. This earthenware pot with a handle is attributed to Pete Obenshain’s family pottery of Mill Creek in Botetourt County. It is salt glazed and has a copper lid. During the early 1800s, cooking dominated the time and energy of the average housewife. Beans, which were easy to grow and preserve, were a staple diet along with bread. Dinner was served in the afternoon and was the biggest meal of the day.
