A 23-year-old Roanoke man was indicted of killing two passengers and injuring a third by a Botetourt County grand jury Dec. 7.
Efrain Hernandez-Claros was indicted on two counts of aggravated involuntary manslaughter and one count of aggressive driving under the influence with maiming, according to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.
The charges came after a late August fatal crash on the Blue Ridge Parkway, killing 19-year-old Juvier Alexander Espinoza-Regaldo and Christian David Spil-Canales, 23. Jorge Moran-Hernandez, 19, was injured, according to press reports at the time.
Hernandez-Claros reportedly drove a Dodge Durango off the road near mile marker 105, returned to the road before rolling the vehicle. The three passengers were ejected. None were wearing seatbelts. The incident was investigated by the National Park Service.
Hernandez-Claros, who is a foreign national, is in the Botetourt County jail in Fincastle. Hernandez-Claros reportedly told park rangers he’d been drinking before the crash, but cannot remember driving.
All total, the grand jury returned indictments against 49 individuals when it met in Fincastle. Of those, certified indictments were returned against 33 individuals and direct indictments were returned against 13 others.
