Spring’s warmer temperatures bring a flurry of spring activities to the Town of Buchanan.

Buchanan’s cherry trees are exploding with a spectacular display of blooms throughout the town. Visitors will find cherry trees along Main Street in the block between 15th Street and Washington Street, as well as along Boyd Street in the upper block. The highest concentration of trees is located along Lowe Street, just below Main Street. If you need to use GPS,  use the address of the Buchanan Town Park at 485 Lowe Street, Buchanan. The cherry trees stretch along most of the length of Lowe Street with several trees also planted along the river’s edge within the Town Park, making for a beautiful stroll and great backdrop for photos.

The updated peak bloom period is March 29 through April 7, but this may change due to weather conditions. For the latest bloom update, check the town’s website or Facebook page or call 254-1212, Ext. 4.

Spring activities continue as the town “plants the seeds of tomorrow today.” Buchanan will be celebrating its 14th annual Arbor Day Celebration on the Town Park this Friday, April 2 at 11 a.m.

Buchanan will celebrate its inclusion in the Tree City USA Program with a commemorative tree planting. Trees and supplies are being purchased through a funds provided by donations made by residents, businesses and civic organizations, as well as a grant from the Virginia Department of Forestry through the Trees For Clean Water Program.

The event features a brief program culminating in the unveiling of the Buchanan Arbor Day Donors Plaque. Following the unveiling, there will be a ceremonial planting on the Town Park. All participants are requested to follow COVID-19 guidelines during the event. All participants and spectators will maintain appropriate physical distance of at least six feet between persons not living in the same household. Anyone who has symptoms of, has tested positive for, or has been exposed to COVID-19 should follow appropriate guidelines for quarantine and isolation. Any individual who has been exposed to or tested positive for COVID-19 within the last 10 days is not permitted to attend events. All participants and spectators should wear masks covering over their nose and mouth at all times.
