River has home track meet today

The James River track team will have its first “outdoor” meet on the new track today when Giles, Glenvar and Alleghany visit Springwood.

While this is the first outdoor meet on the new oval, the facility played host to a polar bear meet during the winter as track teams weren’t allowed to compete during the pandemic. River hosted Lord Botetourt in the inaugural event and the reviews were favorable.

The Knights opened the spring season with a meet at Glenvar last week, and it was also the first spring meet on Glenvar’s new track. The Glenvar track had been completed prior to the 2020 season but the entire season was wiped out by the pandemic.

Last week’s meet at GHS included the Knights, Floyd County and host Glenvar. The Glenvar boys and Floyd girls were team winners, but River was just one point behind the Buffaloes in the girls meet.

First places for the River girls included Vanessa Lima in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, Avery Word in the shot put and discus and Morgan Marshall in the triple jump. The relay team of Marshall, Rachel Hix, Ella Wright and Lima also took a first.

For the boys, Andrew Fowler took a first place in the discus competition.
