Frances Stevens, 95, of Roanoke County, died Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Friendship Health & Rehabilitation Center South following a brief illness.

Frances was born in Roanoke and was the daughter of the late Allene and Carlis Newman. She was raised in Collierstown, Va. and graduated from Effinger High School. Frances was a graduate of the University of Richmond, Westhampton College. After briefly teaching at William Fleming High School, she worked at the Roanoke Veterans Administration Hospital as a medical technician and later worked at A-1 Tax Services. She married William Stevens and settled in Roanoke County. Frances was a member of the Sorority Beta Sigma Phi, and she was a member of Northminister Presbyterian Church for over 75 years where she served as a Sunday School teacher for almost 50 years and a member of Session multiple times.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Jack Newman. She is survived by her children: Brent (Dr. Barbara) Stevens and Dr. Marla (Dr. Bryan) Riley; grandchildren: James (Maggie) Stevens, Deanna (Dustin) Barton, Benjamin Riley, and Linnea Riley; and great-granddaughter, Addison Barton; brother, Robert Newman; and her sister-in-law Barbara Campbell.

A celebration of Frances’ life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville, with the Rev. Russ Merritt officiating. Burial will be at Mill Creek Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Tuesday, 6-8 pm. Services will be available via livestream Wednesday at www.rader-funeralhome.com/tributes/Frances-Stevens.
