Pete was born in Oceanside, N.Y. and grew up in Baldwin, N.Y. He was the son of the late Joseph V. and Mary C. Bettman Mahony.

Pete was a graduate of Millersville State Teachers College (Millersville University) and received his master’s at New York University. After moving to Botetourt in 1992, he was a substitute teacher in retirement for Botetourt Schools. Pete had a real love of history and participated in Civil War re-enactments. He was very civic-minded and enjoyed the Fincastle area. Pete was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and was a veteran of The United States Army, serving in Germany.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Mahony; and six siblings. Pete is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bette L. Oberdorfer Mahony; sons, Peter Clinton Mahony Jr. of Charlotte, N.C. and Brian Peter (Rebecca) Mahony of Greensboro, N.C.; daughters, Diane Fitzgerald of Roanoke, Eileen (Thomas) O’Toole of Charlotte, N.C., and Megan (Christopher) Murray of Roanoke; 17grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Kathleen Pierce of Long Island, N.Y.
A memorial service honoring Pete’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 28 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Roanoke Street in Fincastle. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Botetourt Food Pantry, c/o St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 277, Fincastle, 24090; or to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at the same address. Online condolences may be made to Pete’s family at www.rader-funeralhome.com/tributes/Peter-Mahony.
