[SUBMITTED PHOTO]This large oil portrait is of Joseph Reid Anderson (1813-1892). He was born one mile west of Fincastle at Walnut Hill and graduated second in his class from West Point. He became the only Confederate Brigadier General from Botetourt County in 1861. As the owner and founder of Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, his company was critical to the Confederate Civil War and he continued working there when ordered back to Richmond. He was also a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, President of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, President of Richmond’s City Council, Vestryman and Warden of St. Paul’s Church and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery. American artist William Garl Browne Jr. (1823-1894) signed this painting in 1893. The estates of J. Douglas and Tanja F. Gordon donated several family portraits to the Botetourt County Museum in 2009.
