Botetourt County 4-H recently kicked off the in-school archery program at Central Academy Middle School. On Tuesday, Sept. 14, 4-H leaders began working with students at CAMS on the basics of archery. The program will continue throughout the school year and will accommodate students across all three grade levels. Instructors from Botetourt County 4-H work closely with CAMS physical education teacher Daniel Bowser to promote safe handling of archery equipment, life skills development, and archery fundamentals.
“I am excited about this new partnership with Central Academy Middle School to offer this in-school archery program as a part of club day activities,” Botetourt 4-H Agent Tyler Painter said in a recent interview. “This opportunity allows us to expand our outreach with the students of Botetourt County while promoting a safe learning environment, with trained instructors. We hope that this program will increase the interest of youth to participate in our 4-H Shooting Education Club.”
In addition to this new initiative, members of the Botetourt County 4-H Shooting Education Club have been busy practicing for events and improving their skills with monthly activities. During the weekend of September 11-12, members of the club participated in the Virginia 4-H State Shoot. Several of these participants competed in the Virginia 4-H Shotgun Championship on Saturday, Sept. 25 near Gretna.
On Sunday, Sept. 19, Botetourt County 4-H Archers participated in a 3-D archery shoot at Rub Line Archery in Moneta. These members completed a variety of stations with various 3-D targets. Painter mentioned that 4-H looks forward to more of these opportunities in the future.
The 4-H Honey Club held its monthly meeting discussing business and elected new officers for the 2021-2022 4-H programming year. One of the club’s newest members, Drew Whitson, made a presentation about beekeeping and her experiences with the club.
