The James River Knights will wrap up the volleyball regular season this week with matches against two district opponents. The Knights were at Radford Tuesday and they’ll host Alleghany on Thursday.
Thursday is “Senior Night” at River, and the Knights will recognize seniors Rachel Harless, Bailey Mines and Michaela Hendrick. Then the Knights will wait to see what their fate is for the Region 2C tournament next week. Most likely River will have a “play in” match on Monday at a site to be determined.
Last Thursday in Hillsville the Knights dropped to 7-9 overall with a four-set loss to host Carroll County. The Cavaliers won the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-16, before River bounced back to win the third, 25-10. However, Carroll regrouped and won the fourth set to seal the match, 25-10.
Emma Francis, Lexi McCullough and Bella Gilliland all had five kills for a balanced River attack. On defense, Harless had 14 digs and Mary Hoye had 11.
River’s jayvee team is 6-2 and should be in a jayvee district tournament next year, but brackets were not set at press time.
