Cavaliers, Knights run in Metro Cross Country

The Lord Botetourt girls were second and the boys were third as host Blacksburg swept the 47th annual Metro Cross Country championships last week. James River did not have enough runners for the team standings but several Knights ran as individuals.

Sydney Vokus led the LB girls with a seventh place finish in 20:45.3. Botetourt scored 100 points to finish second behind Blacksburg, who had five top 15 finishes and 41 points. LB’s Ella Johnston was close behind Vokus in eighth at 21:13.4 and the winning time was 19:43 by Glenvar’s Carly Wilkes.

Also scoring for the Cavaliers were Erna Dietrich in 10th place, Karley Burks in 35th and Amelia Dietrich in 46th. Running but not scoring were Hatlyn Haggerty in 47th, Elizabeth Meadows in 62nd and Anna Hoover in 66th place. A total of 104 girls finished the race.

River had one runner competing, freshman Victoria Race-Waller. She finished 60th.

In the boys race Blacksburg won with 41 points, followed by Franklin County with 60 and LB with 105. The winning time was 16:48 by Nathan Atchue of Franklin County while the first Cavalier across the line was senior Evan Gates in 17:15. Also scoring for LB were Carter Hudson in 14th, Cole Stelter in 19th, Rye Jackson I 34th and Aiden Dietrich in 50th. Also finishing among the 132 runners were Tristan Dodson in 89th, Gage Hornback in 99th and Jonah Clark in 106th.

For River, Jacob Hill had the best time with a 62nd place finish. Michael Jorgensen was 67th, Silas Miller was 85th and Wyatt Race-Waller came in at 104.

The Knights will have a full boys team when the Region 2C meet is held at Green Hill Park next Wednesday, November 3.

Lord Botetourt will run in the Blue Ridge District meet today at Franklin County High.
