Emily Jane Whitlock Moore, 89, of Fincastle, died peacefully in her sleep after a brief illness on Saturday, November 6, 2021.

She is survived by her three children, Emily Ellen Moore Maye (Philip), George Christopher Moore Sr. (Gail), and Jennifer Jane Moore; and grandchildren, George Christopher Moore Jr. (Jordyn), Zachary Taylor Moore, and Benjamin Allan Maye. She is also survived by her great-granddaughters, Hunter Elizabeth and Camryn Kate Moore.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Pennell Moore Jr.; parents, Perry Cecil (Bunny) Whitlock and Emily Owens Luke Whitlock; and her brother, William Allan Whitlock.

She was born in Richmond and grew up in Covington. She graduated from Holton Arms School in Washington, D.C., Class of 1950, and Skidmore College, Class of 1954, where she majored in English. She pursued a career in nursing at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston prior to her marriage in 1961. In the 1980s, she received a master’s degree in German from Hollins College.

Emily was an avid classical music lover and traveler. She also loved folk dancing, hiking, skiing, sewing, and cooking. In later years, she joined the DAR, and the Big Spring Garden Club of Botetourt County. She was a long-time member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Fincastle, where she headed the Altar Guild, was a member of the Vestry (including a term as senior warden), and taught Sunday School. For a number of years, she was involved as a volunteer reader for WVTF’s Radio Reading Service for blind listeners; and was an instructor of English as a second language with Literacy Volunteers of America.

She became involved with Attic Productions in Fincastle in the early to mid-2000s, first in the costume department, then in stage management. She helped organize several Twelfth Night musical productions at St. Mark’s; worked on a number of Fincastle Fairs in many capacities; attended numerous PTA meetings; and was a supporter of the Fincastle Historical Society. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a good friend to many. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at Oakey’s North Chapel. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 19, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 S. Roanoke St., Fincastle. A reception will follow at the Ministry Center, next to the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church or to The Nature Conservancy.

Arrangements entrusted to Oakey’s Funeral Service – North Chapel, Roanoke, (540) 362-1237. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.oakeys.com.
