The Botetourt County 4-H Hunting, Wildlife and Outdoor Skills Club is resuming meetings and accepting new members.
The Hunting Skills Club will meet and hold a new member information meeting Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. at The Barn at Back Creek, 528 Back Creek Lane, Buchanan.
The club’s focus is on youth development by working with 4-H’ers to learn skills related to wildlife conservation, hunting, hunter safety, outdoor activities, survival skills, wildlife identification, science-based habitat work, proper firearms and archery use for hunting, etc. Youth 9-19 are eligible to participate in 4-H.
Youth with family hunting experience and youth totally new to hunting are welcome.
The 4-H instructors are certified by the Virginia 4-H Shooting Education Council in the Hunting Discipline. Also, any time youth are handling firearms, they will be under the training and supervision of certified 4-H instructors in whatever type firearm or archery equipment is being used.
While the club is not a “take a child hunting” club, in the past club members who have completed the proper training and demonstrated competence with a firearm have been able to participate in hunting experiences arranged by the club.
The club generally meets twice monthly, with at least one of those meetings an outdoor activity. For more information, call or text Ed McCoy at 540-339-0622, email botetourt4houtdoorskills@gmail.com or call the Botetourt 4-H office at 473-8260.
