Campfires
If you love campfires, s’mores, stories, games or fire trucks (or all of the above), you’re in for a treat! Botetourt County Libraries have teamed up with the Fire/EMS Department for two fun Friday evenings this month. The two events will be held outdoors and in-person at the Eagle Rock Library on Friday, Jan. 14, starting at 5:30 p.m., and the Buchanan Town Park on Friday, Jan. 28, starting at 5:30 p.m. Come join the fun!
Nothing warms you up like a campfire on a chilly winter evening. I grew up in a home heated by a wood stove, and I’ve yet to find a more “down to your bones” comforting warmth than a crackling wood fire. Of course, campfires come with a little risk, so we’re taking precautions. Who better to manage a campfire than our local firemen/women, who know every aspect of fire safety?
Winter introduces unique risks as we try to keep warm in cold temperatures. The tragic apartment building fire in the Bronx reminds us just how serious a lapse of attention to safety can be. Our Fire/EMS personnel will offer instruction in winter safety tips for children through adults. Kids can enjoy fun activities that teach important safety skills while they burn some youthful energy, and adults can ask those burning questions (pun intended) about how to keep their families and homes safe and warm in the cold winter months.
No campfire is complete without stories. People have been storytelling by firelight since the dawn of time, and we love it just as much today as we did back in caveman days. Our librarians will read special stories that capture the imagination of kids and grownups alike, all against a backdrop of crackling wood and flickering flames.
If you’re feeling snacky while listening to those stories, toast some marshmallows over the fire and eat them plain or in delicious s’mores. Yes, they’re messy, but oh so yummy! How close to perfect can you toast your marshmallows?
In addition, we’ll have fire trucks at the event so you can see the real deal in person. Children can see and experience the huge trucks and equipment up close, and we’ve yet to see an adult who wasn’t secretly just as fascinated.
While we’re on the subject of fire trucks, let’s look ahead to February events. If you have little ones, we’d love for you to join our Fire/EMS teams as they read stories virtually! Join us on Zoom at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17 and Thursday, Feb. 24 to interact live with our local heroes and enjoy fun stories with them. Register at BoCoLibraries.info to get the Zoom link. We’re so grateful to these brave men and women for working hard to keep us safe all year round. We invite you to show your support by showing up for them!
