Last Tuesday the girls took on Carroll County in a Three Rivers District game and came out on the short end of a 78-13 score. Caitlin Canada had five points and Honesty Liming had four points and four rebounds but that was about all the Knights could muster against a very talented Carroll County team.
“Carroll County is a tough competitor, and they were firing on all cylinders that night and it was hard for us to get anything going,” said River coach Ryan Firebaugh. “Carroll is going to compete for a state championship.”
On Saturday the Knights took on another talented team, Parry McCluer, in the “Rock the Ribbon” event at Rockbridge County High School. To say the Knights got rocked would be an understatement as River lost 66-2 with three starters missing. River trailed 40-1 at halftime and did not score a field goal in the game.
“Parry McCluer is a tough competitor and well coached,” said Firebaugh. “I was down three starters, so it really shook up the whole team chemistry. It made players step up into a role that they are not normally used too. It was a tough night for everyone, and the girls didn’t quit. The girls worked hard even though the score doesn’t reflect it.”
Ripley Barry scored both River points on free throws and also had five rebounds. Liming had seven boards for the Knights.
Despite the two losses James River still has a winning record at 6-4. The Knights were snowed out of a Monday game with Bath County and tonight’s game at Alleghany was also in question due to continued freezing temperatures. The girls are scheduled to host Floyd County in a key Three Rivers District game on Thursday.
