The Lord Botetourt girls played four basketball games in five days last week against some tough competition and were able to come out with a split.
Last Tuesday the Cavaliers traveled to Franklin County and took a 41-33 win over the Class 6 Eagles in a Blue Ridge District affair. Ally Spangler had a dozen points to lead the Cavaliers and also had four steals. Gracie Huffard had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
“We struggled a bit to take care of the ball this game, but when you can come away with a district win on the road you are always happy with that,” said coach Renee Favaro.
A night later the girls were back home to host an improved Salem High team and dropped a 63-56 decision. The Cavs had a 32-26 lead at the half but Salem outscored LB 15 points after intermission.
“This was a tough loss for us,” said Favaro. “We shot identical shooting percentages but unfortunately turned the ball over 10 more times than Salem, which led to them getting nine more shots than we did.”
Taylor Orange led LB with 19 points, including three three-pointers. Spangler added 13 points with two threes and Grayson Alfano had three threes for nine points.
The girls got a night off Thursday but they were back in the saddle again Friday to take on an undefeated Staunton River team in Moneta and dropped a 55-46 decision.
“Staunton River has a lot of senior leadership, I was really proud of the way we battled following a disappointing loss against Salem,” said Favaro.
Spangler had 16 points, Orange had 11 and Jada Morgan added nine points and nine rebounds.
On Saturday the girls hosted Abingdon in a makeup game and pulled out a 75-66 win at home in their fourth game of the week.
“Fatigue showed, but the girls pushed through to pull out the win despite us missing 24 free throws and a lot of layups,” said Favaro. “We did an excellent job valuing the basketball this game and crashing the boards for 24 offensive rebounds, which led us to take 18 more shots than Abingdon.”
Orange posted a career-high with 31 points with six threes. Morgan also had her best game of the year with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Ainsley Anderson had her best game of the season with 13 points, nine assists and seven steals.
River was not scheduled to play this week until Thursday when the girls host Floyd County. On Friday the River is at William Byrd.
