The James River girls basketball team will have three games in four days this week as they try to make up ground from postponements due to last week’s snowstorm.
The Knights opened the week with a game at Glenvar on Tuesday, and tonight they’re at Covington. A busy week concludes on Friday when River plays the opening game of a doubleheader with the boys in Hillsville against a strong Carroll County team.
The Knights are 6-5 coming into the week. They got in one game last week when they played host to Floyd County last Friday and dropped a 58-33 decision.
“We started out a little flat to begin the game,” said coach Ryan Firebaugh. “We broke Floyd’s diamond press with ease but could not capitalize on finishing around the basket after we broke their pressure.”
Caitlin Canada led the Knights with 16 points and seven rebounds. Honesty Liming had eight points and five steals. The Buffaloes hurt the Knights on the offensive board.
“We were able to get Floyd to take shots that we wanted, we just could not limit their second chance opportunities,” said Firebaugh. “We preach a lot about holding teams to one and done for their offensive possessions.”
River trailed 31-11 at the half, but were only outscored by five in the second half.
“After halftime we were a totally different team,” said Firebaugh. “We made some adjustments and stepped up in certain areas and competed and played well.”
