LB played host to quarterfinal round girls-boys doubleheader on Tuesday in Daleville. The girls are the fourth seed in the 10-team tournament and they were scheduled to play fifth seeded William Byrd. The boys, who come in at 15-8, are the third seed and they were scheduled to play sixth seeded Bassett.
Semifinals are Thursday at the higher seeds. If the LB girls won Tuesday they would play the winner of a game between top seeded Carroll County and Abingdon. If it’s Carroll it would be in Hillsville and if it’s Abingdon then LB would be home.
If the LB boys won Tuesday they would play the winner of second seeded Northside and seventh seed Christiansburg on Thursday, and if it’s Northside then it would be in the Vikings gym. It would be the fourth meeting between the two this season.
The championship games are the top remaining seeds on Saturday and there’s also a third place game.
The LB girls played in the Blue Ridge District tournament championship last week and fell to undefeated Staunton River, 47-31. The girls were outscored 19-1 in the third quarter after playing the Eagles to a draw in the first half.
“We executed well in the first half and went in tied at half,” said coach Renee Favaro. “Unfortunately, we keep having a quarter each game where we don’t show up and that was the third quarter at Staunton River. You can’t have a 19-1 quarter against any team, especially one who is as good as they are and expect to come out on top.”
Ally Spangler led LB with 11 points and Taylor Orange had seven. The LB girls are 18-6.
“We need to find ways to be physically and mentally tougher when things start to go poorly,” said Favaro. “We have to find ways not to unravel. Sometimes our youth in those situations shows, but I know they’ve got the fight in them, we just have to come with that for four quarters.”
