‘Botanical Expo’ at Eagle Rock this Saturday
Ah, spring! It’s that time of year when everyone braves the pollen and fluctuating temperatures to plant and tend their gardens. What better way to kick off the season than a day of garden-related workshops and seed swaps?
“Grow BOCO: A Botanical Expo” will be held this Saturday, April 23, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Eagle Rock Library. Swap seeds, plants, and stories as you explore the world of gardening through hands-on activities, demos, and workshops.
Multiple community partners will be onsite to share their gardening expertise. Our local Master Gardeners can answer your gardening questions, and Mountain Castles Soil & Water Conservation District can help you learn about native plants and conserving natural resources.
Water is vital to a healthy garden, but using well water or public water can be a drain on resources. Why waste the water coming out of stormy skies? Join a hands-on workshop to make your own rain barrel to take home, with instructions on how to use it. There’s a modest fee to cover supply costs. Please sign up in advance so we know how many supplies to purchase for the workshop!
As you doubtless know, pollinators are a key to a successful garden. We’re delighted to host Lily Williams, author of the children’s book “If Bees Disappeared.” At 12 p.m., Williams will offer a 45-minute virtual talk (broadcast in the library meeting room) with Q&A to discuss the importance of bees in keeping our gardens – and our world – healthy and vibrant.
After the talk, you’ll probably want to see some honeybees in action. The Botetourt Bee Club will bring an enclosed observation beehive so you can see busy bees at work and learn how these pollinators can make your garden grow better.
That’s not to say that gardening is easy. Kneeling down to weed, prune, and plant can be hard on your body. The Salem Library is generously bringing their adaptive gardening tools for you to see and try out – tools that make it easier on your hands, back, knees and wrists while you garden.
Bring your seeds and plants to swap with other local gardeners and chat with people who share your interests. It’s a great opportunity to share stories and tips with others, and maybe make plans to trade off some produce when harvest time comes around. You can learn a lot from gardening professionals and hobbyists alike!

Our newest and largest library branch, the Eagle Rock Library is a scenic 15-minute drive from the Town of Fincastle or a 30-minute drive from Walmart.
