The Lord Botetourt baseball team is looking to make up some ground with four games this week, including three district games. The Cavaliers have just one district win despite an overall record of 7-4.
On Monday the Cavs picked up their first BRD victory with a 14-2 win at William Fleming. Three Lord Botetourt pitchers combined on a two-hitter as Nolan Medley went the first two innings, striking out five, Jackson Smith pitched the third and fourth and Andrew Claterbaugh closed out the five-inning game. Shane Oiler, Connor Fuhrman and Noah Leonard all had two hits for Botetourt.
Last week the Cavs swept two non-district games. On Wednesday Medley and Smith combined to shut out Patrick Henry in five innings, 12-0, in Roanoke. Medley had nine strikeouts and allowed just three hits in four innings before Smith worked a scoreless fifth.
Lord Botetourt had just four hits in this game, but benefited from six hit batters and six walks by Patriot pitchers. Jesse Knight had a double for the Cavaliers.
A night later the Cavaliers hosted Brookville downed the Bees, 9-3. Nate Prince took a shutout into the seventh before the Bees rallied to put three on the board. LB coach Todd Smith called on Garrett Green to get the final out as Prince was up to 96 pitches at that point. Nate struck out 11 in six and two-thirds innings.
Offensively, three Cavaliers had two hits and two runs batted in each, Fuhrman, Smith and Owen Prince.
LB was scheduled to host Staunton River on Tuesday, and today the Cavs go to North Cross for a non-district game. On Friday the Cavs will host William Byrd in what shapes up as a big game. Byrd comes into the week at 9-2 and in the first meeting the Terriers won in Vinton in a game that went down to the wire.
