The Eagle Rock Community Center recently received a new metal roof.

According to the Ruritan custom, the August meeting of the Eagle Rock Ruritan Club began with the patriotic singing of “My Country, ’Tis of Thee.” David and Kimberly Pinkney were welcomed as new members of the club. The meal for the meeting was provided as a gift by members of Mount Bethel Church of the Brethren.

During the meeting, the Citizenship and Patriotism Committee announced that a historical plaque will be placed in the Gala area on September 17, 2022, honoring the boxer Novell Lee. The placement of the plaque will be followed by a reception at the Eagle Rock Library.

The Eagle Rock Community Center, home of the Eagle Rock Ruritan Club, has a new look– a new metal roof was installed in July. Further plans call for other improvements in the near future.

The Environment Committee announced a litter pickup scheduled for September 9, rain date September 10.

A Botetourt Senior Focus Day was announced for Friday, Sept. 16, at the Eagle Rock Community Center, 14604 Church Street, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will highlight services available to area seniors (50+). The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Department will provide a free lunch for all who attend, with desserts provided by the Ruritan Club and the Eagle Rock United Methodist Charge.

The Community Engagement Committee reminded members that mobile marketplaces from LEAP and Feeding Southwest Virginia continue to visit Eagle Rock at the Community Center on the first, third, and fourth Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Looking ahead: Ruritan member Penny Neil announced that she will be providing a meal for veterans and their families on November 10 at the MKB Realtor Office in Daleville in honor of Veterans Day.

Ruritan member Robert McRae shared the proof copy of his forthcoming book on churches of Botetourt County titled “Sentinels of the Faith: Called to Worship in Botetourt County.”

The meeting closed with the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

The next monthly meeting will be at the Eagle Rock Community Center on September 20 with a potluck meal at 6:30 p.m. followed by a brief program and business meeting. The club invites other members of the community to join them as they continue to promote the Ruritan  otto of “Fellowship, Goodwill, and Community Service.”
