Ronnie L. Garvey, 77, died June 10, 2022, at home in his man cave.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Chagnon; daughter, Lindsey Carr (Scott); stepdaughters, Marla Vandergrift Ryland (James) and Tryst Chagnon (Ari Kirschenbaum); stepsons, Scott Vandergrift (Jennifer) and Tofer Chagnon (Christine Geer Chagnon); sister, Brenda Maxey (James); granddaughter, Riley Carr; stepgrandchildren, Holly and Erin Vandergrift, Andrew Chagnon, Kaleo Akana, Simone and Isobel Kirschenbaum; and special nephew, Zachary Maxey with whom he shared a love of antique cars. Having lived all his life in the Roanoke area, he leaves behind many friends.
In addition to his parents, William Franklin and Geraldene Hylton Garvey, he was predeceased by his only brother, Carleton, and his friend since childhood, Charlie “Chuck” Boswell.
After graduating from Jefferson High School, where he played Center on the football team, he served in the National Guard attaining the rank of drill sergeant. At ECPI he learned data processing, which led to a 20-year career at Blue Cross Blue Shield, where he rose from night operator to Manager, Computer Operations.
He was a prolific photographer leaving a legacy of family memories. His unique sense of humor and sharp wit sometimes had new acquaintances wondering if he was serious or joking. He expected others to behave in accordance with his own standards and never hesitated to honk his horn, give “the look” or to write a letter of rebuke. On the other hand, he was extremely sentimental having saved cards, notes, and memorabilia and expressed affection through practical gifts and humorous cards. He was a man of his word who took his responsibilities very seriously.
He loved cars and motorcycles and observing the wonders of nature that surrounded him at home. He enjoyed country and popular music as well as country and ballroom dancing. He was a private person who said little but observed a great deal and was a good judge of character. He also enjoyed many high school reunions at the Jefferson Center.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, at the Jefferson Center’s Fitzpatrick Hall, 541 Luck Avenue, Roanoke.
