The poor farm in Fincastle has a long history. These black leather high top shoes were found in one of the outbuildings behind the master’s house. George and Emily Moore bought the poor farm and lived there until recently. They purchased the property from John and Lois Cantrell, who never lived on the property but kept horses there until the 1960s. Their daughter, Darlene Cantrell Craft, inherited the shoes. Her parents kept them on their mantle and told her their history. She donated them to the Botetourt History Museum in 2017. All of the cabins and sheds are gone but these shoes remain as a reminder of life long ago.
