High school winter sports are just around the corner and teams are scrimmaging to prepare for the upcoming seasons.

Thursday will be a big day for basketball. The James River girls will host Staunton High in a scrimmage while the River boys are at Halifax and the Lord Botetourt boys go to Pulaski County. On Friday the LB girls will be at Alleghany.

Next Monday, November 21, the James River girls will scrimmage at Riverheads and on Tuesday of next week the Knights boys will host Patrick Henry. Also on Tuesday LB’s girls are home for a scrimmage against Glenvar and the LB boys are at Salem.

No one scrimmages from Wednesday to Saturday of next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but games start for real the following week, on November 28, as the River girls open the season with a game at Craig County. The following day both LB teams debut against Blacksburg with the girls at home and the boys at Blacksburg.

Other winter sports begin in December. Look for opening dates in upcoming issues of The Fincastle Herald sports section.
