The Lord Botetourt and James River swim teams will be competing in region meets this week at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. LB was scheduled to swim in the Region 3D meet on Tuesday while James River is in the Region 1C/2C meet on Thursday of this week.
Last Thursday at the Botetourt Y in Daleville the Lord Botetourt girls scored 85 points to win the district championship. William Byrd was second with 54 and Franklin County took third with 41. Byrd won the boys championship, followed by Franklin County.
LB junior Layne Jones was named the girls Swimmer of the Year in the district. She won the 200 Freestyle in 2:00.14 and the 100 Backstroke in 1:00.04. She also swam on two winning relay teams, the 200 medley with Hattie Haggerty, Hannah Mizuba and Olivia Nicely and the 400 Free Relay with Nicely, Taylor Lisle and Sarah Frederickson. The 200 Free Relay also won with Grayson Alfano, Nicely, Frederickson and Mizuba.
Other first places for LB included Mizuba with a time of 25.39 in the 50 Free and the 100 Fly in 1:04.14 and Fredrickson with a time of 2:46.95 in the 200 IM.
“What a wonderful night of swimming,” said LB coach Ashley Safrit. “We had nine PRs with some amazing time drops. Even if a swimmer did not drop time, all of our swims looked really strong. Quite a few swimmers placed higher than they were seeded.”
The Three Rivers District did not have a district meet but James River had the final home meet at the Botetourt Y last week against Appomattox, Giles and Glenvar. Highlights included a second place finish in the 200 Free Relay with the team of Addison Jones, MacKenzie Alford, Kaeli Berry, and Drew Whitson. Whitson won the 100 Breast, Walkeer Wilson took third in both the 50 Free and 100 Fly and Alford was third in the 100 Back.
