She is survived by her husband, James Earl Maxey Jr., and son, Zachary William Maxey; step-daughters, Cheryl Deneen Hayes, Angela Carol Perhacs (Paul) and Joanne Marie Wolford; aunts, Lorene Hylton Bishop, Rebecca Hylton Nolen, and Deanna (Dee Dee) Collins Doss; sisters-in-law, Nadine Banks, Judy Cunningham (Carey), Jeanette Hall (Danny), and Louise Chagnon; brother-in-law, Benny Maxey, and many cousins, nephews and nieces including special cousin, Carolyn Bishop Hicks, and special nephew, Greg Garvey. Having lived all her life in the Roanoke area, she leaves behind many friends and former colleagues.
After graduating from Jefferson High School, where she lettered in volleyball, she studied at National Business College and Virginia Western Community College, which led to a lifetime of work as a medical secretary, nursing assistant and in-home caregiver.
During her youth, she and her family enjoyed many weekends camping at Smith Mountain Lake, hosting visiting relatives, and traveling to see relatives in other states. Like her mother, she stressed the importance of family and planned family gatherings weeks in advance. She devoted her life to service to others.
Throughout bouts of cancer and tough times, she remained optimistic and positive. She attended church all her life and helped with the organization of church suppers and fundraisers. Her diligence and compassion, combined with her caregiving training, endeared her to many patients and family members.
The family would like to acknowledge the exceptional care of the Roanoke Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Unit. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Troutville Assembly of God Church, 118 Conner Lane, Troutville, 24175.
