With the end of the high school basketball season the All-Three Rivers District and All-Region 2C basketball teams have been announced and James River was well-represented among both the boys and girls.
Seniors Ryan Steger and Sam Bell were both named first team All-District and first team All-Region from James River. Steger led the Three Rivers District in scoring with an 18.6 points per game average and Bell was fourth in average at 16.5 while grabbing 6.6 rebounds per game. Both Knights averaged over three assists per game.
“It’s great to see our guys get some post-season recognition,” said coach Ethan Humphries. “With the endless amount of work Ryan has put in he deserves every recognition that comes his way. This is his third time on the All-Region 2C team.
“For Sam, his journey of being a limited role player his junior year to first-team All-Region his senior year is inspiring. He trusted the process and was patient for his turn to perform. Sometimes your time to shine doesn’t happen overnight and as quickly as you want, but if you keep working the moment will come. Sam is a perfect example of that and he had a huge year for us.”
For the girls, Caitlin Canada made first team All-Region 2C but second team All-Three Rivers in a district dominated by Carroll County, who went on to win the Class 3 state championship last week. Canada led the team in both scoring and rebounding as a sophomore. Canada averaged 15 points and 7.3 rebounds for the Knights this season. She had six “double-doubles” and five games of 20 points or more.
“Caitlin played extremely well for us all season long,” said coach Ryan Firebaugh. “She improved tremendously on both defense and offense. She worked hard all off season to improve aspects of her game and was always the first person in the gym and always the last person to leave the gym.”
Lexi McCullough and Sydnee Breeding also made second team all-district, and McCullough was a second team all-region selection.
