The James River and Lord Botetourt football teams have put on the pads with the first game just three weeks and two days away.

Teachers are back in school this week in Botetourt County so practices have been rescheduled accordingly. Both teams had morning and afternoon practices last week as temperatures soared into the high 90s, necessitating extra precautions for the athletes.

Lord Botetourt has a scrimmage a week from today, on August 9. The Cavaliers will travel to Emory & Henry University to scrimmage Dobyns-Bennett High School of Tennessee. E&H is the alma mater of LB coach Jamie Harless.

The first scrimmage for James River will be Friday, August 10, at Rockbridge County.

The James River High football team took the field to open practice last Thursday, at least for a while. The Rivermen were able to work on the offense in the old gym, and coach Tim Jennings was able to get in some instruction with the season opener just weeks away.

High School teams are getting busy

The golf season is already underway and other fall sports are gearing up for fast-approaching openers at Lord Botetourt and James River High Schools.

The River and LB golf teams were scheduled to compete in the Botetourt Metro on Tuesday, but results were too late for publication. Today, River will host Riverheads at the Botetourt Golf & Swim Club and LB has a match at Hunting Hills. Next Monday the Knights are at Cliff View for a match hosted by Alleghany and a day later LB will play at Ole Monterey in Roanoke.

The James River volleyball team will be competing in a jamboree at Salem High School on Saturday. Lord Botetourt is at Brookville next Wednesday, August 9, for a scrimmage.

Look for a preview of all Botetourt County sports teams in a special section in the August 23 edition of The Fincastle Herald.
