A list of letters held at the Fincastle Post Office in 1823
Attached you will see a list of letters being held at the Fincastle Post Office from July 1, 1823. To some of you this is just a list of names of people who have not picked up their mail. To me, being a genealogist, I always think, “Let’s bring this list to life and see who they are.”
There are several research hints that I see as I read through the names. The names of people in the household are not given on the 1790-1840 census, so I see women who are not named in the census. I also see a young lady not married and a recently deceased person whose estate is in settlement, among the names. There is also the fact that these recipients are still living, so if they do not appear on the 1830 census, and I look back through the list of letters, it may give a clue as to the years of their life.
The number beside the names tells us how many letters are being held.
I hope this list will be of interest to The Fincastle Herald readers.
