James River High School will host the first of what is hoped to be an annual “Knights Winter Classic” basketball tournament in Springwood this week. The event will include both varsity and jayvee tournaments.

Varsity action begins today, December 20, with four games beginning at noon when Staunton River meets Alleghany. At 2 p.m. Narrows will play Jefferson Forest, followed by Riverheads against Amherst at 4 p.m. The final game of the day has host James River against Auburn at 6 p.m.

Semifinals will be Thursday, with consolation bracket games at noon and 2 p.m. and winners bracket games at 4 and 6 p.m.  The championship game is Friday at 7:30 p.m. with a seventh place game at noon, a fifth place game 2 p.m. and a third place game at 4 p.m. River’s girls come into the tournament at 1-4.

The jayvee tournament will go by the same format and junior varsity teams from the same schools are included. River will open at 4 p.m. today against the Auburn jayvees, with games in this tournament to be played in the old gym at James River High. The jayvee championship will be at 6 p.m. Friday.

The James River boys were off for a week before taking on Liberty High at home on Tuesday. Results were too late for publication, but the Knights were 2-5 at that point.

The boys will play at Bath County on Thursday of this week, then take a week off before playing at Waynesboro on December 29. The girls are home against Waynesboro on December 29.
